Welcome to Crabgrass

Crabgrass is a software libre web application designed for social networking, group collaboration and network organizing. Our goal is to create communication tools that are tailored specifically to meet the needs of bottom up grassroots organizing. The internet may herald a deep change in democratic communication, but the internet is simultaneously the most effective tool for mass surveillance ever devised. Crabgrass is a secure alternative to for-profit social networking and organizing platforms.

Crabgrass Update

Crabgrass Update

We are steadily working on the core rework as well as continuing to upgrade the current code. Most recently we have developed slick new galleries with audio captioning as well as well as squashing a whole host of annoying bugs. You can follow ongoing activity here https://labs.riseup.net/code/projects/crabgrass/roadmap

Core Rework In Progress

Core Rework In Progress

There has been a frenzy of articles describing the use of social media in the revolutions in North Africa, more often then not overstating the role of the medium and understating the role of people and their organizing efforts. It is within this context that we have been recently contacted by a variety of different people interested in writing about Crabgrass. We are happy for the attention, and believe very strongly in the need for secure social software that is not built using a surveillance business model.

That being said, we are keeping our heads down as we focus on a deep rework of Crabgrass that will be available this spring. When we come up for air, we will be more then happy to talk at length about why we think Crabgrass is needed and what role it can play. In the meantime, if you are not currently using Crabgrass, we advise that you wait for the upcoming 1.0 series before taking it for a test drive.

0.5.3.2 Released

0.5.3.2 Released

Greetings! While we have been silent for a while we have certainly not been idle. Work on the sleek re-write of crabgrass core is in its final phases. While that work proceeds we continue to improve the 0.5 series.

This is to announce that 0.5.3.2 is now available! Its a small release, with some important fixes. It will be followed shortly by 0.5.4.

The important fix is there was an XSS issue in the chat, that has been fixed. Please upgrade as soon as possible.

Other fun things in 0.5.3.2 are the sweet new way to see user and group activity statistics; ability to have group wikis open or closed by default; ability for siteadmins to disable the profile invisibility option; an updated media player; autocomplete drop downs for location filtering in directories and for adding geo-locations to your group profile. And, as usual, along the way, we stomped on a few bugs! Full details in the changelog below.
